The 19 September 2022 Michoacán earthquake (Mw 7.6) was a seismic event that struck a large part of México and caused five deaths, localised damage mainly on the Pacific coast and numerous environmental effects (Tectonic uplift, anomalous waves and tsunamis, slope movements, liquefaction processes, hydrological anomalies, ground cracks). M. Magdalena Velázquez-Bucio (Centro de Geociencias, UNAM) immediately after the earthquake carried out fieldwork to catalogue the numerous environmental effects caused by the earthquake, in collaboration with various research institutes including the University of Insubria. In order to search for new effects and to corroborate those already collected, new fieldwork in the area affected by the earthquake was carried out in March 2023 by Marco Pizza (University of Insubria), M. Magdalena Velázquez-Bucio and Andrés David Nuñez Meneses (Centro de Geociencias, UNAM). The work focused on the effects still evident and the location of other effects by interviewing direct witnesses of these effects. The results of this work are very interesting, because despite the fact that six months have passed since the earthquake, many effects (fractures, landslides, tectonic uplift,…) are still very evident; moreover, the testimonies of the local population have made it possible to collect data on effects that are no longer evident, allowing a more complete and detailed analysis of the environmental effects induced by the earthquake and their intensity.
